Our eldest little girl Bella slept through from about 14 weeks. Penny, on the other hand, will turn two at the end of March and she still wakes 2-3 times a night. To our knowledge we haven’t done anything differently. We have however experienced sleep deprivation to such an extent that we truly understand it now when people say that their eyeballs hurt.

We think we are making a bit of progress but then a tooth comes, or a cold starts, or injections are needed and we are suddenly swept right back to the tortuous beginning again.

Unable to control Penny we did try to address the things that we thought might make a small difference to accepting our new found zombie status. I started adding magnesium salts to my bath, I laid out all of our clothes the night before, lunch boxes were never left to the morning and we decided we would give our bedroom a facelift. Fresh paint, new bedding and a new gorgeous bedframe from next.

So when the lovely team at Emma offered us one of their award winning mattresses to review we jumped at the chance. I think we are one of the many (many many) families who had a need for a new mattress; but didn’t actually know where to start. There are so many options, so much choice, and so much technical mattress jargon where do you begin?

I’m going to share with you below the things you need to consider when looking to buy a new mattress, and how Emma have them covered.

1)      Where is it made?

The Emma mattress is manufactured in the United Kingdom at their production site in Derbyshire. All of their mattresses adhere to their high quality assurance standards and because of their UK base they receive an environmental thumbs up as well.

2)      What is it made of?

There are several types of mattresses out there, but the most common are innerspring, memory foam and a hybrid that combines the two.

Emma is a Hybrid mattress built with four layers and this unique design makes it a seriously comfortable option. The four layers consist of hyper soft foam, conical pocket springs, visco elastic memory foam and cold foam. It is 25cm in depth.

My husband is pretty much twice my weight. He sleeps on his side. I sleep on my front. The way this mattress is built means that it adjusts to your body, and your sleeping position. So whatever your size, shape of style of sleeping the design of the mattress will allow both partners to be comfortable.

The progressive sinking technology of the Emma Mattress and the fact that it adjusts to your body type, regardless of your size or weight is what makes this brand stand out from the crowd.

3)      Consider the firmness

The mattress industry does not have a standardised measurement of mattress firmness. This means that one manufactures firm could be another makers extra firm. I have since learnt that these measurements are guidelines not absolutes anyway. The Emma mattress lands at a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale and what I can tell you that this personally means to me is that it is absolutely perfect for offering the balance of sinking in comfortably but not so much you won’t be able to haul yourself out of bed when the baby wakes. It provides the ideal mix of comfort and support.

4)      Do it come with a trial period?

Yes – the Emma mattress comes with a 100 night trial period. It will be delivered directly to your door, and if you decide it’s not for you simply call them and they will come and collect it. They then refund you with no hidden costs. Again, they are based in the U.K so their customer service is excellent.

5)      Does it have a guarantee?

Yes – it comes with a 10 year guarantee.

6)      Practical considerations

The Emma mattress is one of the new ‘bed in a box’ mattresses. I always believed if you wanted a new mattress you went from shop to shop spending 60 seconds lying on each, not really knowing what you were looking for and just probably gong with the cheapest anyway. The fact that you get a 100 nights to really trial the product shows the upmost confidence that they have in their product.

When the mattress was delivered it arrived vacuum packed in a compact box and I simply had to cut the plastic film using the tool provided. I was then able to put it into position no problem at all using the carry handles on the side and within 5 minutes it looked perfect and ready for use.

7)      What are the reviews?

You only need to have a look at the reviews on their website to see why this mattress is becoming so popular. At the time of writing this review the Emma website had 295 reviews scoring a whopping 4.69 out of 5.

8)      Has it won any awards?

The Emma mattress has been tested by Which? Which? is the largest consumer body in the United Kingdom and The Emma mattress received the coveted “Which Best buy” for 2017.

9) Is it priced competitively?

Yes – for a product of the quality it certainly is. Singles are prced at £379.00, doubles are priced at £599.00, King Sized are priced at £649.00 and super kings are priced at £749.00

With all the above in mind, and having now had more than enough time to check the mattress is right for us, I’m delighted to share deatils of this brand with you and would suggest if you are looking for a new mattress this hybrid is an excellent choice.
