If I could have a repeat of any weekend of the year so far it would be our recent weekend at the spectacular Gitcombe House with 12 of my very nearest and dearest.

Located in beautiful South Devon between Dartmouth and Totnes these are baby, child and family friendly cottages done right. The luxury self-catering accommodations at Gitcombe make it a holiday spot to remember. 3 generations arrived Saturday lunchtime and before bags were unpacked, kettles were switched on, or corks were popped, we raced around exploring this beautiful property we were lucky enough to call home for the weekend.

This classic Georgian country house has 5 big bedrooms upstairs (and another bedroom downstairs), a gorgeous bathroom with views to remember (and a spot to enjoy them from in the luxurious roll top bath), a dining room designed for family celebrations, 2 cosy reception rooms and a beautiful farmhouse kitchen with a pantry where we could store the ridiculous amount of food we took with us (!)

We all swooned at the beautiful décor as we walked around…the antique furnishings combined with contemporary comforts and finishing touches demonstrate that a lot of thought and love has gone into making Gitcombe House a truly memorable break for you and your family.

There were 7 adults in our party and five children. In all honesty, we would have a fantastic time together no matter where we went because quality time together is always appreciated, but what made the weekend exceptional was the variety of activities and facilities on offer to suit all age ranges.

On site you will find:-

Indoor swimming pool with showers and changing rooms

Steam room

Outdoor hot tub

Fantastic soft play area & football table

Tennis court, adventure play area & grounds

Outdoor swimming pool

Boules court

14 acres to explore

Toy shed with buckets & spades, tennis rackets and balls, fishing nets, a selection of balls and other toys

Within the house there was a library’s worth of dvds and books as well as board games in the cupboards and a big tub of sticklebricks which Penny (18 months) absolutely loved. There were also two full sized cots in two of the bedrooms and 3 highchairs available to use.

Toiletries were provided in the bathrooms, wine and scrummy fudge was left to welcome us, the dining table was set beautifully ready for us feast like kings, logs and matches were waiting fireside ready for us to snuggle down & snooze, and overall it felt like we had arrived at the most beautiful home from home… but one that could confortably sleep all 12 of us!

We stayed for a weekend, but without doubt, you could easily make this your summer holiday destination of choice and not run out of things to do… especially when you consider what a beautiful area of the country Gitcombe resides in. Nestled in the Devonshire countryside, Gitcombe has miles and miles of secluded coves and beautiful beaches nearby as well as a host of other family friendly activities.

Peter & Joanne have put together a fantastic book of information that you can pore over as a family and decide where you would like to head to & how you can spend your time, and the lovely hosts are on hand to answer any questions you might have about the property or the area.

Some of my favourite memories from the weekend include…

Finding Little Nanny stuck up a tree after a particularly competitive game of hide and seek in the grounds

Watching Roy’s parents taking a stroll around the grounds stopping every few steps to take pictures and film the grounds

Seeing Bella and Penny have the time of their lives with the cousins in the swimming pool

Watching each and every one of us try… and then fail to ‘play’ tennis with any grace or skill (!)

Seeing my nephew’s face light up when he realised he could help himself to anything he wanted to borrow in the toy shed

Seeing my two nieces excitedly pick which dvds they were going to watch from the extensive collection

Preparing a family roast with my mum, sister and mother in law in the beautiful big kitchen with the radio on, large glasses of wine and the kids excitedly running around

Seeing both Grandads asleep in the lounge with books on their chests

Spending an hour in the hot tub with my mum and sister uninterrupted

Going for a walk around the grounds with Roy & the girls collecting conkers

Nothing out of the ordinary, but beautiful family memories to treasure captured in a spectacular setting.

We are already planning to go back next year and do it all over again…exactly as it was.

P.S If Gitcombe house is too big for your needs they have another 7 beautiful cottages on site… all beautifully decorated… all jam packed with amenities 🙂

*Our stay was complimentary for the purposes of review, but as always, only genuine recommendations are ever added to Country Mummy and this particular spot is recommended from 78 years old all the way down to 18 months old 🙂
