Dorset

Lancombe Shepherd Huts

Lancombe

We love the look of Lancombe in the beautiful countryside setting of Thomas Hardy Country. Forget wet canvas and soggy sleeping bags, and enjoy a much more exciting and luxurious option with Lancombe’s Dorset Glamping experience.

If you’re looking for campsites in Dorset for a self-catering holiday with a difference, Marjorie has arrived, the first of four luxury Shepherd’s Huts that have been commissioned especially for Lancombe. Loose Reins

loose reins

Loose Reins owners Marc and Michelle have created an authentic pioneer-style holiday destination in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Dorset.  Offering beautifully hand crafted and fully equipped pioneer lodges and ranch cabins, as well as top quality Western riding facilities, Loose Reins is a superb destination for anyone seeking to leave the daily grind behind and put the handbrake on the pace of life for a while.

Horsemanship and Western Riding play an important role at Loose Reins with lessons, trail riding and horsemanship workshops available. They can cater for children of around 12 years (5’ tall) and upwards for actual lessons and those under this age can have a ‘have a go fun session’ in the arena or off the leading rein depending on ability.

They also have two Shetland ponies for fussing over and one can be ridden by very small children on the lead rein.

If you prefer to put your feet up, you could just relax on the front porch, watch the horses graze, listen to bird song or watch the buzzards circling lazily over the trees. Time goes slow in Loose Reins country, and when the day melts into the evening you can grab a drink and sit by the fire, or stargaze for a while.

Sleeping up to six and set in generous grounds, the cabins and lodges have top quality furnishings, plumbing, electricity, fully-equipped kitchens, proper loos, hot showers, gas ovens, wood burners and outdoor fire bowls. All in all, it’s the most relaxing stay possible – you can discover your trail and connect with the wild in luxury and style.

A four night midweek break starts at £435 and a three night weekend break starts at £420.

We adore the look of Cornish Tipi holidays. A unique site set in a woodland valley folded around a clear, spring-fed lake created from the old Tregildrans Quarry. 40 authentic style North American tipis made of cotton canvas are dotted about the 16 acres – a thriving habit for flowers and butterflies, birds and mammals.

Each tipi fitted with an external hat to keep the rain out and is equipped inside with basics you might need, custom made ground sheets and warm Turkish rugs on the ground and lanterns on the poles.

The site has flushing lavatories and hot showers at each end of the site. Customers are encouraged to cook over a crackling campfire. The lake, with clear blue and green waters looks like an experience not to miss.

You can swim and bathe in the water, fish for rainbow trout, use the boats and canoes to row an muck about or just sit and watch the swallows and dragonflies dipping in the water.

A wonderful location, you are 5 minutes’ drive from some of the prettiest Cornish villages and stunning Cornish Coastline. Port Issac is within 10 minutes of leaving your tipi or visit the trendy Polzeath for surfing lessons.

Country Mummy Contributor Jess has stayed in a shepherd hut with Scamper Holidays with her young family….

“We had a wonderful time as a family.  The views were amazing and the hut itself was really cosy, and we were more than warm enough in April. It was big enough for the 4 of us, and the children adored the time, it was a real magical experience. What a beautiful setting! So many stunning beaches to explore close by. It was a perfect place to stay, in an area that we were not familiar with. A wonderful holiday!”
