Somerset Yurts, nr Taunton
Providing stunning luxury glamping accommodation, Somerset Yurts allow couples and families to get back to nature while enjoying a tranquil break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Somerset Yurts is a fantastic eco-friendly rural retreat nestled on a working Dairy Farm in the beautiful Quantock Hills. 5 miles north of Taunton, the county town of Somerset.
You will find your yurt nestled in a beautiful, peaceful field that boasts stunning, uninterrupted views over Taunton Vale and the Blackdown Hills beyond. In such serene surroundings you’ll soon unwind and find yourself immersed in the countryside.
The four gorgeous Mongolian Yurts are 19m in diameter and each have a double bed and a double futon. Cot-beds for smaller children can be supplied. The maximum number that can sleep in the yurt is 4 adults or 2 adults and 2 or 3 children.
There is room for additional blow up/rollout mattresses for children, which can be hired out or you can take your own. The site capacity is 16 adults – but they urge you to get in touch if your group is larger.
Somerset Yurts feel the yurt and the surrounding countryside make a great experience for children. Aiming to be as child-friendly as possible, they can provide travel cot, highchair etc. Old fashioned games are supplied in the yurts and barn to keep you entertained.
There is a well equipped kitchen in the nearby barn, including an electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge – freezer, kettle and toaster. Also pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, utensils, glasses, mugs, tea towels etc are provided. So all you need to take is food.
There’s also a Dutch Oven available for the fire-pit if you’re feeling brave! Each yurt also has a BBQ, gas stove, and a cool box, so there are plenty of options!
You can wander freely around the yurt field, but as Hill Farm is a working farm they ask that children are supervised. For health and safety reasons you may only visit the farm buildings and yards under supervision – but they are more than happy to show you around, and children especially enjoy seeing the calves and the milking process! There are some lovely walks around the farm and they have maps of the local area.
The farm itself borders the Quantock Hills, there’s a couple of car parks within a 10-15 min drive to allow you to explore some of this area of outstanding natural beauty.
There are many attractions close by as well for you to explore including Fyne Court, Hestercombe Gardens, West Somerset Railway and Exmoor is not too far away. Somerset Yurts also have their own blog, with some lovely ideas of what to do in the local area on their website.

Little Combe Cedar Yurts, Nr Dartmouth
Artist’s impression of these incredible Yurts which will be finished very soon!
How about these wonderful wooden Yurts coming soon to bring luxurious glamping to Little Combe Farm, again in another fabulous area of Devon. Woodland walks, hooting owls, back to nature relaxation combined with the most comfortable place you can think of – offering everything you can think of from dishwasher to Wifi to en suite showers and even a hot tub! The glamorous and ever so circular Owl yurt is just the ticket. Perched on the top of a sun-dappled wooden valley, Owl is cedar clad from top to toe so as to blend into this tranquil setting. You are right in the middle of nature with jaw-droppingly beautiful views across the tree tops to the valley below.
Your story starts at the shared parking areas, where you unload your kit onto a trolley and toddle the short distance to the unique site (the equally lovely Pheasant Yurt is above you, but far enough away to feel nicely private) Beside the huge deck – perfect for alfresco dining, is a sheltered wood fired hot tub. The entrance leads you into either the main yurt, and incredible 8 metres in diameter or the smaller yurt a generous 4 metres from side to side. Both have Wifi and underfloor heating, so you will always be toasty whatever the weather.
The big yurt is cleverly divided into sitting, cooking, dining, sleeping and bathing areas with a fully footed kitchen (including an electric cooker, dishwasher, fridge freezer and microwave), a king size bed, en-suite shower and flushing loo. A wood burning stove means you can build up a roaring fire and if you are worried about missing your favourite show you can even request a TV! Across the hall way in the baby yurt, you’ll find triple bunk beds and another en-suite shower.
Children will have a wonderful time here den-making, tree climbing and general running around outdoors. You can look out for local wildlife including deer, foxes and badges and at night fall asleep to the atmospheric hoots of owls and squawks of pheasants.
Less than a mile down the road is the pretty waterside village of Dittisham. There are two pubs and an excellent seafood café. Many wonderful places to explore are close-by for fun days out including Totnes, Dartmouth and you can be at Blackpool sands within ten minutes.
The Cedar Yurts are due to open in July this year.

Cornish Tipi Holidays, Nr Bodmin
We adore the look of Cornish Tipi holidays. A unique site set in a woodland valley folded around a clear, spring-fed lake created from the old Tregildrans Quarry. 40 authentic style North American tipis made of cotton canvas are dotted about the 16 acres – a thriving habit for flowers and butterflies, birds and mammals.
You have a choice of medium (sleeps 2 – 3, if one is a small child), large (sleeps up to 6) and extra large (sleeps 9 -12, again if some are young children) They can be booked in the community village , where you will have neighbours, or in your own clearing with a little more seclusion on a private site. They also have four double private sites, where friends and family can book tow tipis together.
The tipi’s themselves reach up to 18 feet high, giving you a generous living space and an amazing sense of space and light. Each tipi fitted with an external hat to keep the rain out and is equipped inside with basics you might need, custom made ground sheets and warm Turkish rugs on the ground and lanterns on the poles. You will need to take your own bedding (e.g a blow up bed and duvets or sleeping bags) You get your own camp stove and cool box and kitchen utensils are provided.
The site has flushing lavatories and hot showers at each end of the site. Customers are encouraged to cook over a crackling campfire. The lake, with clear blue and green waters looks like an experience not to miss.
You can swim and bathe in the water, fish for rainbow trout, use the boats and canoes to row an muck about or just sit and watch the swallows and dragonflies dipping in the water. Parents can be reassured that the lake is fenced off, with a child proof catch on the gate! Plus you can borrow life jackets if you don’t have your own.
A wonderful location, you are 5 minutes’ drive from some of the prettiest Cornish villages and stunning Cornish Coastline. Port Issac is within 10 minutes of leaving your tipi or visit the trendy Polzeath for surfing lessons.
If any of your Country Mummy readers are yet to tie the knot. Then be sure to check out www.cornishtipiweddings.co.uk – looks magical!
It was also interesting to see that you can take your own tent or campervan for wildcamping in the meadow. At very reasonable prices you could enjoy everything the lovely lake and valley have to offer.

It really is clever what people can do with a big metal box. So clever that Rusty is another of our picks featured on Channel Four’s TV series George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces.
Your holiday begins with a quick whizz with your kit in a wheelbarrow from the parking area to the seven acre wildflower meadow (shared only with a pair of safari tents) Rusty’s raised wooden deck has wonderful views, where you can sit and relax.

There’s a microwave, a small fridge with a freezer box and a kettle, plus – just in case you tire of gazing at the gorgeous view – a flat screen TV with a DVD player. It was big enough for the 4 of us, and the children adored the time, it was a real magical experience. What a beautiful setting! So many stunning beaches to explore close by. It was a perfect place to stay, in an area that we were not familiar with. A wonderful holiday!”
