There are a million and one reasons to love London and although I'm a country mouse at heart I get wistful if we don't play curious tourists every few months. Next time I'll aim for coordinating red white & blue outfits and personalised t shirts just to really please my husband (!)
The fastest train from Taunton to London Paddington takes just over 2 hours, Berry's coaches offer the London Superfast timetable, or you can hop in the car which is what we did last Wednesday.
We were invited to ZSL London Zoo to explore their Easter Dear Zoo trail (still running until the 17th April) and we followed the popular books characters around the zoo collecting stamps & taking part in the activities at each stop – before settling down for a book reading session at the storytelling hub perfect for our little book worm.
Rod Campbell's Dear Zoo has been a much loved little book in our house for years & it was enchanting to see this story come to life.
ZSL London Zoo is a lovely day out. It's situated in Regents Park & offers a wide array of exotic and unusual animals.
The gorilla kingdom and tiger enclosure were family favourites. The daily live shows are fantastic & really interactive. You can pick from Pygmy hippos, giraffes, tigers and others too. Ask when you arrive what's on where to make the most of your visit.
You could easily spend the whole day at the zoo but there was a picnic spot 5 minutes away with beautiful views over the city that I had my eye on - Primrose Hill. A picture perfect location to relax, people watch and take in the scenery.
With time on our side we would of visited Camden too (also very close) but I had promised my little girl a trip to a beautiful book store.
Daunt books in Marlyebone made Bella's eyes pop. This beautiful Edwardian galleried building would have been our resting spot for the rest of the day if the decision was left to her.
She picked from the children's section and asked to explore going up & down the steps, touching the spines of the many hundreds of books with her ickle fingers, chatting happily to staff about a 'new' Dr Seuss book that she had discovered and informing me that 'Peppa goes to London' was the chosen book for Penny.
After much deliberating over how to spend her pocket money we just about had time for a quick bowl of pasta next to the Prince Edward theatre before Bella and I excitedly took our seats for Aladdin.
The show is laced with comedy, spectacular costumes and so much singing & dancing at times it felt like we were watching elaborately wonderful circus performances.
There was certainly an abundance of Broadway razzle dazzle within the show, and as a true sentimental type I couldn't help but feel butterflies at the romance of the story. When we left Bella's eyes were bright with wonder and she commented 'Mama can you believe we've just seen a real magic carpet ride?'
