Brownscombe Luxury Glamping...

We have recently come back from a family break at Brownscombe Luxury Glamping - and what a break it was! With 3 generations visiting, including our brand new little Penny chops at just 6 weeks old, I can honestly say that Brownscombe is a brilliant choice for a family getaway.

From the moment we arrived, Kate, the owner, could not have been more welcoming and helpful. She escorted us to our luxury Safari tent, which had 2 bedrooms (a double and a single), plus a lovely cabin bed in the living area - perfect for our daughter Bella, aged 5.

She showed us the shower room and separate cloakroom, and the sitting area, which has a day bed and a dining space. There is also a cooking area which had all we needed for our stay - a fridge, an electric hob, hot and cold water, and a large, log-fired range which we used for both cooking and heating - in short,  all our needs were catered for... including a very thoughtful welcome gift of a bottle of fizz in the fridge :)

As a sepcial addition with the safari tent we were lucky enough to stay in, we had the extra luxury of a wood fired hot tub - great fun, part of the experience, and lovely in which to enjoy a glass of cold bubbly.

We also took full advantage of the BBQ , as we were really lucky with the weather, which helped us to enjoy our stay at Brownscombe, and all of the family fun that it has to offer, to the fullest.

Kate is the loveliest host, and my little girl Bella was smitten straight away. Isabella can be quite shy when initially meeting someone, but she warmed to Kate immediately. Kate radiates kindness and friendliness, and Bella was drawn to her immediately.

At most places how nice the host is doesn't play much of a part in your break... as long as your welcome is good and you know what is where, you don't really see them again.

The difference with Brownscombe, though, and this is what I think sets them apart from many other Glamping sites, is that Kate is on hand every morning & every afternoon to take your little ones off your hands for half an hour to help feed the animals - chickens, ducks, pigs, cows - this was easily the highlight of Bella’s holiday.

The site itself is set in open fields, perfect for little ones to play in, with a lovely little park that can be seen from all the safari tents. There is also a games room on site, where you can play pool or table tennis.

Not forgetting the Brownscombe larder, the onsite honesty shop, where you can buy or order a range of lovely local produce, drinks, snacks and ice creams - and the eggs!!!! As fresh as can be, chickens’ eggs and ducks’ eggs - absolutely wonderful. Bella loved helping pick the eggs in the morning,  and then walking down to the shop with Daddy or Grandad in time for breakfast to buy them all with her pennies.

We have been to a fair few Glamping sites as a family now.

It works for me for many reasons... I love knowing that I am giving my little girl the outdoorsy experience with marshmallows over the fire, camp songs, bug hunting and lazy BBQ afternoons whilst a) not having to get at all wet if it rains b) having a ridiculously comfy bed to sleep in and c) having lots more time to drink and eat rather than unpack and set up.

Yes we were sleeping under canvas... but that is really where the resemblance to camping the traditional way ends.

I want my little girls to enjoy outdoor adventures and experience new things, of course. I also want to drink fizz out of a glass and get a hot shower with fluffy towels (fluffier than I can get them at home!) This is a perfect combination for me.

Brownscombe is situated in the beautiful county of Devon, close to Totnes and the lovely village of Marldon, and just a few miles from the sea.

There are many excellent and varied places to eat and drink close at hand, and Brownscombe is ideally situated should you wish to venture out and explore your surroundings.

There is so much to do in and around the local area you’ll never be short of inspiration when planning your days out, and here are just some of the options for fun when staying at Brownscombe:

1)     South Milton Sands - owned by the National Trust, free parking if you’re a member. Best to try and get there early to avoid traffic.

2)     Totnes - a lovely town, with a fascinating history, located on one of Britain's most beautiful waterways, the River Dart. For attractions in and around Totnes, see here:

3)     Paignton Zoo - within 10 minutes you’re in the company of giraffes, lions, gorillas, meerkats and more…As with any attraction in season, an early start is advisable if you want to miss the queues!

4)    Living Coast, Torquay - The perfect place for exploring. Penguins, seals and otters, right next to Torquay marina.

5)     Crealy Adventure Park - an award winning family attraction located just a few minutes from junction 30 of the M5, near Exeter. Over 60 rides and attractions, set in over 100 acres of glorious Devon countryside, for all to enjoy.

6)     Compton Castle - on Brownscombe’s doorstep! Turn right out of the drive and head for the Castle. Just before you get to it turn left, and you will see a map with arrows pointing to a one mile walk giving you some fantastic views - steep, but worth it.

7)     Brownscombe - the perfect base for keen walkers. There are wonderful long walks on National Trust land in the South Hams countryside, and beautiful Dartmoor is just a short drive away.

All in all, I can honestly say that Brownscombe exceeded our expectations, and we would not need our arms twisted to make us go back again.

P.S if you fancy off loading the kiddies for a couple of days for a romantic getway their enchanting Cornish Tabernacle on site perfect for two is absolutely enchanting. I believe there have been a few proposals at this idyllic little spot already and it is easy to see why :)
